ABOUT US

Welcome to Gathering Thoughts

My name is Sam Martin. I am a Level 7 Psychotherapeutic Counsellor and a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I work mostly in a Person-Centered framework, which means that I will try to help you fulfill your potential through engaging in and understanding how you perceive your life. I believe that you are the expert on your own experience and aim to offer you the tools and necessary information to make the changes you want and need. This means that I am happy to have conversations around sex and gender, race and racial issues, and cultural differences in counselling, as long as it is helpful to you and your personal development.

Where We Are

I currently live and work in Fuzhou, China. Mental Health in China has as many stigmas, as it does in many other countries. Breaking mental health stigmas is important the world-over, and I am honored to be doing so in a country as amazing as China. My journey here wasn’t as exciting as you may assume; I studied hard and worked harder on getting my MSc, and then needed a holiday. I ended up on a working holiday for a year here in Fuzhou, and I fell in love with the city and surrounding area. The people are friendly, helpful, and as eager to teach about their culture as they are eager to learn about yours. I haven’t lived anywhere else in China yet, but I imagine that each city has it’s own beauty and charm.

I am also the founder of Gathering Thoughts. There isn’t a big expat community here in Fuzhou, and therefore there is a gap for a psychological counsellor in this area. I conduct sessions online, face-to-face, and over email in an attempt to fill this gap in psychological support. Moving to a new country is hard, not only because of the language barriers and the exciting new foods, but also because for most people this means leaving their support network behind and attempting to forge a new one. In most cases this is a challenging thing to do, and everyone will have a different experience of it.
Gathering Leaves
By Robert Frost
Spades take up leaves
No better than spoons,
And bags full of leaves
Are light as balloons.

I make a great noise
Of rustling all day
Like rabbit and deer
Running away.

But the mountains I raise
Elude my embrace,
Flowing over my arms
And into my face.

I may load and unload
Again and again
Till I fill the whole shed,
And what have I then?

Next to nothing for weight,
And since they grew duller
From contact with earth,
Next to nothing for color.

Next to nothing for use,
But a crop is a crop,
And who's to say where
The harvest shall stop?
